OVERVIEW

An interactive installation that invites visitors to meet AI-generated versions of themselves—as if a portal briefly opened onto another possible life.

THE QUESTION

What happens when a machine imagines who else you might have been?

Inspired by Everything Everywhere All at Once, the project treats the multiverse as a way to reflect on identity rather than as a distant science-fiction spectacle. Each generated figure becomes a speculative mirror: recognizable, unfamiliar, and open to interpretation.

The installation explored how generative AI could move away from a solitary prompt box and become a spatial encounter. A visitor’s body, position, anticipation, and reaction all became part of the interface.

HOW IT UNFOLDS

A portal that notices your presence and returns another possible you.

01

APPROACH

A marked standing point gives visitors a simple invitation to enter the installation’s field of view.

02

BE SEEN

A Kinect sensor detects presence and movement, allowing the screen to brighten and acknowledge the visitor.

03

CROSS THE PORTAL

The system generates a speculative alternate-self image and reveals it as a message from another universe.

04

INTERPRET

Visitors decide what feels familiar, strange, desirable, or unsettling about the identity returned to them.

DESIGN THROUGH ITERATION

Designing one continuous loop across space, sensing, generation, and reveal.

01

STORYBOARD

Mapped the encounter as a short narrative with anticipation, recognition, generation, and reflection.

02

PROTOTYPE

Tested the standing point, Kinect position, screen response, and physical scale as a single spatial composition.

03

IDENTITY

Developed the portal, visual language, interface flow, and speculative-news framing as one coherent world.

04

GENERATE

Connected body sensing with an AI image workflow, then refined prompts for diversity, meaning, and playfulness.

WHAT THE PROJECT TAUGHT US

The most interesting AI image was not necessarily the most beautiful one—it was the one that made someone pause and ask, ‘Could that still be me?’
01

Embodied AI

Generation became a public, bodily encounter rather than a private exchange with a prompt box.

02

Speculative reflection

Alternate selves created an accessible entry point into questions of identity and machine imagination.

03

Future portal

Next iterations could send images to visitors, animate generated figures, expand the structure, and add ambient sound.
